Tour #2010A "The Arctic Explorer"
(Arctic Ocean Adventure)
Season: May 20th to to September 8th
Destinations: Prudhoe Bay, Arctic Ocean
Departures: From Fairbanks 8:30AM by road or from Fairbanks 9:00AM by air
Length: three days; flying one-way  |  Monday - Saturday from and to Prudhoe Bay
Options: Can be combined with or added as an extension of Tour #7010
  Day 1 - Add-On Tour #9020 
Additional Info: First two days are the same tour as Tour #2010 with a one-way flight back to Anchorage or Fairbanks

Aircraft used Between Prudhoe Bay and Fairbanks

  • Twin-engine, 8 passenger Navajo or

  • 19 passenger Beechcraft 1900 or commercial jet

Day one:

Arctic ExplorerNorthbound Departure:

Departing Fairbanks 8:30 am we will be traveling North on the Steese, Elliott highways, from Livengood we begin the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay. Known locally as the Haul Road.

Stops this first day will include:

  • The Yukon River for lunch on your own
  • Bakers Knob for photos of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline as it zigzags across the tundra
  • Finger Mountain to learn how the country was formed by lava outcroppings 300 million years ago
  • This day you will pass three of the Trans Alaska Pipeline Pumping Stations
  • A photo at the Arctic Circle, and
  • this day is complete entering the beautiful Dietrich Valley dinner on your own in Coldfoot
  • Overnight in Coldfoot

Option of an Add-On Tour #9020 flight-seeing tour over the Gates of the Arctic National Park

Day two:

Back on the Dalton and continuing through the Dietrich valley. The mountains to your left form the border with Gates of the Arctic National Park. The mountains to your right form the border with Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). We will start our climb over Atigun Pass the highest in Alaska at 4875 feet with Chandalar Shelf.

At the Chandalar Valley we will be north of the Alaskan tree line and in open tundra. From Atigun Pass we begin our traveling onto the North Slope of Alaska, from here all waters flow north to the Arctic Ocean. Traverse this vast open Tundra country.  This day we will again pass three more Trans Alaska Pipeline Pump Stations.

  • Overnight in Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay

Day three:

  • Morning Oilfield tour to "toe dip" in the Arctic Ocean
  • We say goodbye to our fellow travelers on tour who will be flying
    • back to Fairbanks
    • or on to Point Barrow.

Southbound Departure: 

This tour is also available as a flight North and ground tour South.  It is the same itinerary as above only in reverse order. 

Northbound departures available on Sunday and Thursday May 20 – September 6; additional Northbound day starting June 13 – Wednesday

Southbound departures available on Tuesday and Saturday May 20 – September 6; additional Southbound day starting June 15 - Friday
